Teaching in Asia, picking the right location

Asia is one of the most sought after destinations for internships and jobs. It will open a whole new world, give you an in-depth look into some of the world’s oldest cultures, and allow you the experience of a lifetime. Asia offers one of the largest markets on the globe for English language instructions.

Many popular destinations include: China, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Each country offers a different experience and it’ll be impossible to predict which location will appeal to each person. Some countries will pay off financially while others will pay off more in experience.

Often countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan tend to pay off financially. These countries often offer more opportunities and can offer more lucrative pay and benefits. However, competition is steep and having previous teaching experience is beneficial and can increase salary.

Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia may offer more experience than high salaries. Salaries tend to be lower in these countries along with the cost of living.

How to prepare

Doing some research will help in deciding which country may be best for you and because things are constantly changing. The qualifications for each country vary. Most countries require that you have a bachelor's degree before you can officially start teaching. Other times they may also require that you have a TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. Having previous teaching experience, such as internship experience or an education specific degree are all beneficial.

If teaching English isn’t what you’re looking for but still want to gain teaching experience in Asia, Cambodia, India, and Nepal may offer a different kind of educational experience from that of a traditional classroom. In these countries you may have the opportunity to do more hands on teaching that include art classes and basic computer lessons, along with curriculum development and support in and assistance in administrative work.

Asia is an incredibly fascinating place with amazing opportunity.

No matter if you decide to stay for a few months or a few years, you’ll find yourself immersed in a new culture and gain new experiences that you can’t find anywhere else.
