The city of Seoul (in Korean: 서울) is old enough to have experienced many name changes over the years. In recent time it has been celebrated as Asia's most livable city (2015), the city with the world's best airport (2005-2013), the 4th largest metropolitan economy (after Tokyo, New York and LA), host to the G-20 summit (2010) and the home to 15 of the world's top 500 companies. Seoul is very densely populated (more than twice the level of New York) and people have learned to live in close proximity with their neighboors.
Seoul is one of the world's foremost hubs of technology and innovation, which has led to, among other great developments, the world's fastest internet. The city is served by both a high-speed rail and a subway (with wifi), and is expecting to introduce 5G internet in 2019.
Seoul, along with the rest of South Korea, enjoy a mostly mild climate with humid summers and cool winters. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, where the weather is the most pleasant and you can experience some of Korea's traditional festivals. The peak of summer can get very warm and is best avoided. If you find yourself in South Korea during summer, head out to the beautiful coastal towns instead and cool down by the water.
Seoul is divided into 20 individual districts (Gu) of varying sizes. The most famous being Gangnam, 강남구 (thanks to that catchy song that could make an entire room break into a coreographed dance in seconds) but larger ones include Songpa, 송파구 and Seocho, 서초구.
The monthly cost of living in Seoul is around KRW 2,500,000 to cover the basics. You can of course save money through your life style or you can go all-in on Korean boutique shopping and enjoy the world-famous night clubs in style.
Korea is known for its rich history and culture, a pivotal part of Korean culture is respect, particularly to elders. Make sure you give up your seat on the bus or subway to an elderly person and if you’re socialising with people older than you, make sure you pour them a drink before you fill your own glass!
